Fairway Staking a Claim on the Upper East Side
Fairway Market’s expansion plans for the Big Apple are heating up. The popular grocer is negotiating to lease a space on the Upper East Side, according to real estate sources, bringing its Manhattan store count to three.
The nearly 60,000-square-foot retail space at 240 E. 86th St., between Second and Third avenues, formerly housed an outlet of the now-bankrupt Circuit City and a Barnes & Noble that moved elsewhere in the neighborhood. Sources say competition for the space was heated, with retailers including Whole Foods and Nordstrom Rack vying for a deal. The lease—still under negotiation, the sources caution—is expected to be completed within the next 40 days.
